Page 1 of 4 MEDAL OF HONOR (MOH) The Medal of Honor (MOH) was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on July 12, 1862, and has been awarded 3,460 times to heroes “for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life, above and beyond the call of duty, in actual combat against an armed enemy force.” Background: -The Mayor requested that the Veterans Affairs Commission (VAC) provide recommendations for creating a memorial to local Medal of Honor recipients
-City Council appropriated $50,000 toward a conceptual design proposal for the MOH Memorial
-VAC recommends placing the memorial in the Veterans Memorial Plaza Historic District The VAC has established the following criteria to commemorate local MOH recipients: -born in San Antonio, or -entered the service in San Antonio, or lived in and/or contributed to SA community
-The MOH Subcommittee has currently identified 16 potential honorees, but continues to research and evaluate any additional potential candidates before making a final recommendation.
